THE SOLUTION, 2009

Ruth Lyons and Carl Giffney were invited to represent The Good Hatchery at the inaugural show of IMOCA (the Irish Museum of Contemporary Art). The show entitled This must be the place invited ten Artist collectives and initiatives currently working in Ireland to respond to the question How do we think? It was expected that each group would manifest a physical response to the question and that the work produced would be in no way archival of the collective’s past work or pedagogical but that it would form a unique response to the question. This must be the place was curated by Sally Timmons and Paul Murnaghan.

The Solution is the first collaborative artwork by the artists. The Solution was built in an attempt to embody the essence of ‘ How we think’ and the values that underpin the formation of The Good Hatchery. The Solution is a timber resevoir withnine radiating water pipes, each connected to a brass tap and a corresponding photo ofa watertower from somewhere in the midlands of Ireland. Visitors had the opportunity to fill up a provided glass vessel with water from one of these nine water towers.

The Solution takes its form from utilitarian or the ultraordinary structures that exist in our landscape. Through a gentle subversion of its purpose the Good Hatchery hope to promote a new perspective on that which is commonplace.
In relation to this project, ‘ We think’ that there are resources and opportunities inoverlooked areas of Ireland. ‘ We think’ that these resources are important and can bevery inspiring and rich if dealt with in the proper manner.
