MISSIONARY 52, -7 , 2010
Missionary 52, -7 was commissioned for Commonage an exhibition and series of events exploring community in contemporary rural ireland. Commonage was curated by Jo Anne Butler, Tara Kennedy and Rosie Lynch and was funded by the Arts Council, the Irish Architecture Foundation and Callan Community Network.. Missionary 52,-7 is the fifth collaborative work by Ruth Lyons and Carl Giffney also known as the Good Hatchery.
Missionary 52, -7 was sited on the top of an ancient Norman Moat and Bailey in Callan town, Co. Kilkenny. The architectural structure took much of its influence from contemporary peace keeping missions. The site of the Moat and Bailey provides a panoramic view which takes in the town of Callan including the gardens and yards of old buildings and the new Callan by-pass motorway. From this priviledged aspect Missionary 52, -7 made use of high powered lights and a video projection in anattempt to make connections between Callan’ s history, its present and its future. Through the use of structural forms associated with peacekeeping and space exploration, Missionary 52, -7 drew links between the history of violence in this public space, the petition for the towns current by-pass system and the future of the Camphill community within Callan town.
