Leviathan (ii)

Marley PVC waste pipe, Neodium Magnets, plywood, fishing line

Leviathan (ii) was created in response to my experience on the island of Inish Turk Beg during a weeklong residency in September 2010 in conjunction with the RHA and Monster Truck. The work was then exhibited alongside the works of the six other resident artists at Monster Truck Gallery, Temple Bar in March 2011.

In form the work is inspired by the architecture of fish farms. Embedded in both the timber and the PVC structure are opposing magnets causing a friction and jarring movement between the two structures. This friction was inspired by a tension I felt on the island between two great forces, that of nature and technology. It is through the recent widespread availability of broadband Internet that the reality of Inish Turk Beg, as luxury retreat has been made possible. Today on the Island isolation is an option not an obligation.

Other artists in the show included: Michelle Considine, Nina Tanis, Eilis O’Connell, Nick Miller, David Farrell and Shoichi Sakurai.
