Every Man is an Island
Installation created while on residency on Inish Turk Beg. The residency was curated by Patrick T Murphy of the RHA and Peter Prendergast of Monster Truck Galleries and saw seven artists working and living on the luxury Island retreat of Inish Turk Beg for one week.
Every Man is an Island is a temporary work that was installed on Inishoo also in Clew Bay. It calls to the gods of communication technology to bestow information on this deserted island. Everyman is an Island relates to the history of cargo cults that sprung up on islands in the south pacific in the aftermath of world war II.
Although remote in the traditional sense of being disconnected from land the island of Inish Turk Beg is highly connected to the global society as each building is supplied with a super high speed broadband connection. The island is also equipped with two webcams each providing a different view from the island. The Croagh Patrick facing webcam looks directly out on Inishoo and the site of this installation. Inish Turk Beg is one of only two inhabited and serviced islands among the hundreds of island that make up Clew Bay.
The six resident artists will exhibit in Monster Truck Gallery, Temple Bar in March 2011
