Sky is the Limit

2011/ Scoil Naomh Eoin, Co. Meath / Percent for Art commission

A banner towing event where a two small aircraft flew over the school, towing a banner. Nine photographic images from the sky are installed in the school as the lasting artwork.

An airplane towing a banner reading ‘SKY IS THE LIMIT’ flew from the National Flight Centre in Leixlip to Navan and circled over the roof of the school a number of times. A second airplane tracking the first plane had a photographer Alan Dwyer on board – to capture the event from the skies. A live feed of the take-off was relayed via webcam to the school where the children assembled to watch the airplane’s progress on a large projection before gathering outside to see the planes pass overhead. On the ground, a second photographer Alex Synge documented the event. SKY IS THE LIMIT was conceived and inspired by the vibrancy of Scoil Naomh Eoin. SKY IS THE LIMIT is a celebration of the limitless potential of children’s minds. The artwork sets out to foster this sense of creativity in the daily running of the school. In a time when society is facing many problems and challenges this artwork strikes a positive stance and outlook for the future. It offers the children a light-hearted point of departure for their personal explorations of the world.

SKY IS THE LIMIT was curated by Clíodhna Shaffrey and Sarah Searson. The project was commissioned by Scoil Naomh Eoin and funded by the Department of Education and Science's Percent for Art Scheme, 2011
