Sugar Sometimes

2019/ IDA Ireland / Permanent commission for Dublin Headquarters

Sugar Sometimes is inspired by notions of way marking and adornment that are fundamental to human constructions throughout time, a sort of jewellery for landscape attracting people to place and setting it apart from others. The use of beeswax and sugar came out of conversations with the bee keeping community in County Carlow and their use of hard candy to sustain the bees in winter.

The sculpture in a sense is a totem to bees, to their integral role in a functioning eco-system. In the context of the IDA and the umbrella theme of ‘The Art of Attraction’ Sugar Sometimes speaks of the role of IDA in promoting place and attracting workers to the Irish landscape.

A special thank you to Workhouse Union and VISUAL Carlow for inviting me to work with the Carlow Beekeepers as part of their TownPlanners programme 2018
